                                                                                      Lighting Your Life

A beautifully decorated home is a pleasure everyday; take it to the next level with good lighting and make your home spectacular by night. Lighting can add drama, dimension, tone and texture to every room and meet your every mood or social gathering. Most often lighting is the most overlooked and neglected part of the design in your home; the areas where budget constraints have caused comprise or the issue was just not addressed. For your space to achieve its true potential it must have proper lighting to frame the finished design and enhance the room as a whole. The right lighting is the perfect accessory and can affect your mood and your feeling of general well being.

Today more than ever we have access to great lighting. Lighting that makes daily tasks easier, provides warmth and romance to our environment and enhances the structural features of our homes. There are four basic types of lighting that should be used in our homes. They are: ambient lighting, task lighting, accent lighting and decorative lighting.

Ambient lighting fills the undefined areas of a room with a soft level of general light, enough light to easy move about a room.

Task lighting is a bright light that illuminates a particular area where a visual activity such as reading or food preparation takes place.

Accent lighting is similar to task lighting in that it consists largely of directed light. This lighting is used to focus attention on artwork, or architectural features, to set a mood or provide drama.

Decorative lighting maybe the centerpiece or focal point of the room; it draws attention to itself. A beautiful chandelier over the dining table would be a good example. Decorative lighting can fit into any of the first three categories above.

Lighting should be placed where it is needed and also be balanced around the room. To bring harmony to the home lighting should flow seamlessly and from room to room. It is necessary to make sure you are not creating glare. You may need to use lamps with darker shades or correct reflective glare off other objects. Dimmer switches on all your lights make it possible to switch lighting from strong to soft when desired. Make sure you use the correct bulbs for your lights. Pay attention to where you point your lights, such as ceiling as the light will show any problems you may have there. Lighting can also help make a small room look larger; or a larger room may appear smaller and more intimate depending on the lighting. Lighting can be used to highlight artwork or special features in your home creating interest and drama.

Be aware that the entry is very important as it is the first impression guest will have of your home;   make it warm and inviting.
