Color has a very powerful influence on how we feel. For some gray skies may be oppressive making the day feel long and tiring. On the other hand blue skies may be a perk me up color making the day feel fresh and full of promise. Our sense of being is strongly influenced by all the colors in our environment and how we relate to them. This relationship of colors and feelings is especially true in our homes. Some colors are calming making us feel safe and offering respite from the worries of the world. Vibrant colors often impart energy into a space inspiring us to feel happy and active. The colors we choose for our homes allow us to create a sense of feel for our space. The possibilities of colors are wide and varied and offer the opportunity to make your home uniquely you.

In our homes color gives the most decorating impact for the least amount of cost. Imagine your home filled with color, whether it is subtle or bold; color can transform your environment to extraordinary. Go from uninspired to warm and inviting, a home that welcomes your family and friends. The magic of color can add energy to your rooms and lift your spirits as shown in this red kitchen. It is easy to imagine the lively conversations that accompany meal preparation in this room.
When it is time to slow down and relax the color blue is calming and restful as in this bedroom. This is a personal retreat, a place to regroup to become centered with ones’ self. The stress of the day seems to fade away in the quite of the colors. There is no better way to transform the mood of a room than with color.
Many times the concept is one should paint their home a nice safe white. After all if you decide to sell your home in the future it should be white or cream with beige carpet and
curtains. The thought is white is such a safe color; you can pick your furniture without a thought to what color would work with the walls. Do you really want to live your life in such a bland home? Having said this there are many beautiful rooms done in beautiful varied shades of whites; what makes them exciting is the varied shading and hues, the patterns and textures and the excitement of something unexpected. The art of the mixing all the elements of the room transforms the room from boring to brilliant in this type color scheme.

There are many shades and hues in every color and many of these are neutrals. These shades are neutral as they go with most if not all other colors extremely well. The sky is a perfect example of neutral in blue as is the green in the garden. In nature the sky may be a gray blue in some areas of the world that blends beautifully with all the landscape. Yet in a tropical area it may be a more intense blue that works with the sandy shores and flashes of bright colors.

Don’t think of the true colors when considering colors as neutrals think of the “off” shades or “dirty” shades of colors. Let your mind see layers of various shades of a color as accents not contrast. Think tone on tone and remember the changes in texture and pattern, light and heavy. Use an accent color to catch the eye but not to jar the senses. This color can add another dimension to the room in throw pillows or rugs, decorative accents as vases or a piece of furniture.

Try adding subtle stripes to a dining room walls for luxury and elegance. Maybe you want to transport yourself to a seaside spa with color and texture in your bath. Color and a little imagination is all it takes. Adding color to your home can transform your most personal space into a beautiful world that isn’t even close to bland.
