A Place of Your Own
In today's families mentioning a place of your own most likely brings to mind the kids’ rooms or even a shared space given over for use by the kids. The adults probably think in terms of a shared space for maybe paying billing or even watching television as a space of their own. It mostly likely seems to be a selfish idea to have a space of your own just for you. The real truth is most of us would really like to have a place we can call our own and this could actually benefit our well being. This space might be a place to pursue a hobby, a quite place to read or even a place to watch television without interruptions. Whatever personal activity you prefer having a space of your own can calm your mind and free your creative spirit. Participating in a personal pursuit is rewarding and allows us to come together as a group with more to share for having taken time for yourself.

Once you have decided this is a really great idea, you will most likely think there just isn’t room in your house for this luxury. Before you toss out the idea, give some thought to what you would want to do in your space. If you want a private space to read or daydream while looking out a window with a view, you might be surprised that you do have the room. Building a window seat could be a great solution; this might be as simple as adding inward to a room with ample space and a window of the right proportions. By building bookcases or storage on either side of the window and adding a comfortable seat between them you can have a space of your own. It is important to get the dimension and design correct for the window seat and a bit of professional help or research would be advisable.
You may only need an area as large as a corner of a room that
would provide enough space to accomplish your needs. A place that would create a space that is just yours, separated from the larger family area. If you have a large family room it might afford a corner for you to have a space for meditating or maybe scrap booking. This area would not be visible from the shared room and would allow your work to be left out; while not adding clutter to the shared space. To accomplish this you would need an attractive folding screen large enough to span the corner and be a decorative element in the room.

Another area that might be just what you need could be the wide shallow closet with double fold doors found in many bedrooms. Storage such as shelving can be built into the ends of the space and a desk surface placed between the shelving units. Drawer units can help support the desk surface from below while adding additional storage. The original shelf overhead offers even more space for storage. Lighting can be installed in the overhead shelf and a desk lamp will provide the additional needed light for work. An electrician can run the necessary wiring to accommodate your lighting, computer and other equipment needs. When not working at your desk you can close the doors and even if you have left your work out it is hidden from sight. This type space could also be used for a gift wrapping center by installing rods above the desk surface for rolls of wrapping paper. Spool boxes could also be installed for spooling out ribbon. A wrapping center would make easy work of gift wrapping as there would be no need to pull out boxes of paper and ribbon and then repack each time they were needed just close the doors and they disappear.
If you have a need for a larger area consider the rooms in your home that are not used often. Do you have a guestroom that is only needed once or twice a year? You might want to claim this room for yourself. You could still use the room for guests when necessary if you plan properly. A Murphy bed might be the right answer. A Murphy bed is designed to fold up onto the wall when not in use. These beds disappear when folded, becoming a decorative or functional part of a wall. A wall of built-in bookcases with a fold down desk could be a part of a Murphy bed.
There are several looks that can be designed for these beds. If there is a properly sized window a guest bed can be designed as a part of the window seat that disappears when not in use. These clever ideas mean when there are no guests the room can be used as an office, a hobby room or even a study/library.
Utilizing your space in this manner lets you have a space of your own and a guestroom with minimal cost.
A space we can call our own is actually is a very human longing. Just as the desire to spend time together is a need we all share; having a private space can rejuvenate our mind and nurture our spirit. We can more eagerly embrace our shared time together as a direct result of spending some solo time in our own pursuits.
